Play on words

Posted on Thursday 7th April, 2011

People who, like me, are fans of the comic song genre won't have failed to spot that my blog is also named after a fabulous Flanders and Swann ditty of the same name.  For me, comic songs are all about fine wordcraft: as well as F&S, Jake Thackray, Charles Trenet, Richard Stilgoe (on a good day) and Ian Dury have all made their contributions.

Some of Jake Thackray's work has even been known to move me to tears: his song, Ulysses, that details his love-hate relationship with his dog is a masterpiece of its kind.  Even Lily Allen has made her contribution although some of her rhymes are stretched to breaking point.

F&S probably did more to further the BBC's on-screen portrayal of disability than anyone since Ironside - and he apparently wasn't a proper wheelchair user anyway.

I hope you enjoy the song as much as I do.  Perhaps it's because my house has been overtaken by carpenters, decorators, bricklayers and the like that their well chosen words seem to ring so true.
